Default worsening starting problem

when i go to start my car from a cold state, it really doesn't like starting. it started with having to turn over a little too long a few days ago, but while trying to leave work tonight it was barely firing till it got above a 1200 rpm. then it ran like a champ.

that's what throws me off, that it runs so good once it is running.

i want to change the plugs back to OE NGKs from the v-powers that are in it now. if that doesn't help, i fear my timing belt is stretching and it needs to be fixed NOW.

anyone have any input for me?!

Has the timing belt been done?

I know you have a few miles on it, if it hasn't, do it NOW.

Test the coil pack/wires, etc too.

i think it's the plugs.

wires and plugs are about 10,000 miles old i'd say.

i'm gonna change the plugs tomorrow if i can get some. i doubt it, so she has to last a couple more days. they come in over night through work. i might second source them. we'll see.

so i went out and woke it up.

i think it's the fuel pump.

reason:

the anti-drainback valve. if it sets for an extended time, like during work or overnight, i has a hell of a time starting.

this morning, i primed the system 3 times. started a little rough, took a few turns over more than usual, but fired pretty well. idled for a few, cut it off.

after about 20 second, started like a charm.

i think the fuel is draining back during the long periods.

cause once it's been running, it fires right back up, even up to an hour or two later.

we'll see

oh yeah, still doing it. if i just hold the key a second longer, all is well, but still, what the hell's the deal?

the confusing thing is that except for that hiccup, it runs great otherwise!

oi vey.

anyone OTHER than mark have input?

This issue is news to me.

Perhaps you could do a little test.
If you turn the ignition to the "run" position, does the electric fuel pump run on its own ?
If so could you try priming the pump for 30 seconds or so before starting it, and see if that allieviates your cold starting issues ? Just a thought.

What Johnathan said should work. I leave my key in the "on" position for 4 beeps and then start the car. It normally fires up faster than just cranking right away.

hopefully it'll be fixed with the new timimg belt in a couple weeks.
