Default 235/40/17 tires on 17x7 rims.

I'm about to purchase new 17x7 rims.
235/40/17 tires will fit on 17x7? I should check it out before getting the rims.

225 is pretty much as wide as I would go on them, just make sure that the 225 tire isn't "wide"

You need to look up the specifications on the specific tire you want to get. For example, most (if not all) Bridgestone 235/40r17 tires require rim width of 8in to 9.5in. I definitely will not recommend mounting a tire on a non-approved rim.

225/45r17, on the other hand, will fit rims 7-8.5in, and that's what you can and should get.

I've got 235's on a 7in no problems. They do recommend a 8in for my tire but it fits just fine. Hankook Ventus RS2 (should note... 235/40/17)

The basic premise. Wide tire on narrow wheel bad.

Now for more detail.

More tire on lesser rim = more stress on the sidewall.

More rime on lesser tire = less stress on the sidewall.

If you are just putting tires on for show (ie. you brag about your performance car but you have never tracked it) then 235 on a 7 inch will fit and will roll around on the ground. However the sidewall will take the brunt of the lateral load in hard cornering. For most daily drivers, even those who's drivers think they are pushing the car, it will work fine. For those that are going to push the car to the limit, a few high G corners and the sidewalls become rice paper.

I run mine at the track, AutoX, street, and general parkinlot asshattery. For that reason I went with a wider wheel and a smaller tire. 235/40-17 Eagle F1 GS-D3s on 5Zigen 17x8.5 wheels. I am going to pick up some dedicated SSRs for the track and plan on running 9 inch wide wheel for the 245 R compound rubber I am going to use.

I would not go more than 225 on that wheel. Azenis in 215 would be a better choice, they are about as wide as most 225s but are rated to fit well on your wheel.

Ya, im not at all saying its ideal. However it seems that with this random wheel that i have which says its 7in, althought its got the wrong bolt pattern cast on the back even thought it is the correct one, that my RS2's in 235/40/17 fit well and feel great. I push the car both autox and just having fun in said parkinglot asshattery (well somewhat hehe) and have had no flex issues as of yet.
