Vin # for O2 sensor?

Has anybody called the dealership asking for an O2 sensor and they ask you for your vin #? I called today looking for a rear O2 sensor for my 05 STi and the dealer said that Subaru made several O2 sensors and they need my vin # to make sure I get the right one. I think it has something to do with voiding my warranty. Has anybody else experienced this?

they will ask you for the vin# for any part. i guess it to make sure you are getting the correct part. but it is normal.

it could be that there are 3 O2 sensors and off by 1 number on the part number. the vin is the best and most accurate way to find a part for your vehicle... unless modified that part. my guess would have to be the length of the wire of the O2 sensor.

For the love of God.....why do people think aliens are reading their brain waves when a dealership asks for a friggen VIN. A VIN is NOT your social security number. A VIN will not allow a dealer to mess with your warranty as a dealer CAN NOT do anything to your warranty ONLY SOA can. They need your VIN because even though you have a 2005 car, Subaru uses different parts/variations of parts within each model year. Your VIN allows them to get the specific part. Don't want to give it to them because you think they will send it to Elvis at CIA headquarters? That's your right.

i put a foil wrapping over all of my vin plates so aliens cant steal my oilcovers!
