Default Rock/Bug Deflectors... how well do they actually work?

Wasn't sure if they actually work or not... I'm talking about the black plastic piece on the front of the hood. Also, I know this is nitpicking, but do they have any significant impact on MPG?

Don't know about mpg, but I think my OEM deflector has done a great job in minimizing the number of rock chips on my hood. At least half the consideration, though, was that the black plastic looked cool on the white hood.

Install is a pain in the ass.

Well worth it though.
