Default GM Selling Off Pieces of Heritage Collection

GM Selling Off Pieces of Heritage Collection

Just south of 16 Mile, in a nondescript industrial park on the fringes of Detroit's suburbs, stands an innocent warehouse that few know exists. It's the home of the GM Heritage Collection, the automaker's internal museum and candy store for enthusiasts. Unlike the Walter P. Chrysler Museum, with its swooping displays and modern architecture, the GM Heritage Collection looks like it once housed a tool and die shop. For good reason, too the Heritage Center isn't open to the public. It's a repository for General Motors' concept cars, production cars, and leftover miscellany from its past. It is also now, according to the Lansing State Journal, selling off its assets.

Manager Tom Freiman is quick to point out that the Center is not dumping its inventory, but "thinning the herd" in "a thoughtful way." With a collection of nearly 1,000 vehicles, however, that's still a lot of herd to thin the paper estimates that nearly 250 cars will cross the block at the Barrett-Jackson Suction in Scottsdale, Ariz., this January. The collection is supposedly being repurposed to represent "milestone vehicles," but it's hard to see this as anything but a quick cash-grab in an effort to keep the lights on.
