That's exactly how I viewed it before ordering mine. Is it anything special? no, not at all. Is it cheaper? yes. The only negative downgrade to me was not having HIDs. Will I be able to get HIDs from a totaled STI some day, most likely and in the end it will still be quite a bit cheaper.
I also dont like automatic climate control, i dont like the reg. STIs wheels, i could care less about turn signals on my mirrors and Im replacing the speakers/head unit no matter what model I got. I could care less about the suspension too, ill be upgrading that, even if it is "spec c."
The main purpose of the SE for me was just to get the STI as cheaply as possible since i'll be replacing most of the parts anyway. It shouldnt be blown out of proportion because it's a "special" edition but more of a way to save a few bucks on the initial investment.
In the end I saved well over 2k to have nicer stock wheels and no HIDs.
$33,206 out the door for the SE (as well as fog lights and rear bumper cover) after a $500 ordering deposit (taxes/titling/etc.included in that price).
