How can you drive a car "all night" and only make it 40 miles? Maybe you were in 1st? Not shifting can definitely cause engine trouble. I'm going to guess you're not familiar with the basic steps of checking oil. Proceed as follows:

1) Wait for the oil to drain into the pan, this takes a few minutes. Checking your oil immediately after the car was running will always yield low results.

2) Make sure you are on flat and level ground.

3) Check your oil, wipe, check again.

4) Discard results, because these oil dipsticks suck

Seriously, though, immediately after a change I don't bother with the dipstick. Put in 5ish quarts of oil and call it good. If you're hearing ticking and funny noises because of your oil level, you are already in trouble.
