I think it depends on how the ad was out. For example, my part time right now was listed on the UW jobs website, where you can upload your resume and send it digitally. My communication with the potential employer was through email. This makes sense.

But when it's something you hear about in person, I would march the **** up there and make sure they got my resume and details in person. If you have two people with similar qualifications and one emailed you but the other actually showed up in person?... I know who would get hired.
