I agree with this, with conditions.
First, as mentioned, we (COBB) have a superior set of table definitions and features available. We hired the best Subaru ECU reverse engineer in the country ~2.5 years ago and put the pedal to the metal to try to be the absolute best reflash option available, but not just for business purposes, but rather because we want to give people the ability to tune Subarus better than ever before. I've been putting in some serious work to deliver stuff like complete
injector characterizations (NOT just scalar and latency) and pushing the engineers to find tables/logic that I know exist but haven't yet been seen or found by anyone in the reflash world.
Also - knowing "how to tune a gasoline engine" is one thing. Understanding the logic behind the OEM ECU is an entirely separate thing. The OEM ECU is not a standalone and if you don't understand the very complex logic that it uses to calculate how to operate the various devices it controls -- injectors, coils, boost control solenoid, etc. -- you'll never get it right, now matter how well you know "how to tune a gasoline engine".
I see this all day, every day. Experienced tuners from other platforms or standalones call with questions and get angry when I tell them it's not a standalone and to take a step back to learn the ECU before moving forwards. Hence why so many guys who are incredible on standalones can't tune a stock-ECU Subaru for squat and why so many "Subaru tuners" wouldn't have the first clue how to get a car to even start on a standalone, let alone perform a complete from-scratch tune for the car.
Example: a long-time standalone and drag racing feller recently purchased most of our software packages. He's a great guy and very knowledgeable but flat refuses to accept that he MIGHT not have a complete understanding of the factory logic he's trying to control. He adjusts fuel from idle to WOT using ONLY the MAF curve and berates our CSR staff for "writing such stupid ignition timing logic", because we of course designed the Subaru timing strategy

Fortunately, there are people out there who know both. I'm no tuning genius but I learned a long time ago that in order to be a good tuner, no matter what you're working on, you gotta be humble and willing to learn. And there's no better way to learn how to tune something that's new to you than when your boss installs one in your personal car while you're not paying attention, then tells you to figure out how to make it drive home or enjoy the nice walk
