I was raised to be prepared, so I usually have a shovel(metal, NOT plastic), heavy duty tow strap(I'm a little concerned if I ever have to use this with my car as the newer models only have a big i bolt that screws into the bumper beam and not the chassis) and jumper cables, although since I've had a Subaru I haven't had to use any of those for myself. Also extra warm clothing(including hat and gloves) for emergencies, not really necessary in the city but I was sure glad I had my carhart coveralls when I was standing on the side of the parks for hours last march. Oh I almost forgot flashlights, multiple high output reliable flashlight. Always good to have a tire pressure gauge or two. Fix-a-flat. Flares. You can pick up an emergency roadside kit most places fairly cheap that includes a lot of these things.
