My understanding is that the Patriot/Compass uses the CVT to get a "low range". Forester is a longitudinal drivetrain. Most transverse drivetrains send the power through the enclosed front differential first and then to the transfer case/center diff. I don't know of a single transverse mount drivetrain that has a true two speed transfer case.
