Wife had the Wagon (98 GT/5-spd) over to Healdsberg (NoCal) for a wedding, and me looking forward to a nice weekend bach-ing it, and I get a call Sat morning. Subie shifter "feels funny, clunky-clanky" when she gets ready to leave the Motel. So, I grab some tools and head out for the 135 mile trip, with visions of the shift-bushing nut&washer being gone/loose. Even stopped at a nearby dealer to get the hardware just in case, not in stock of course! But don't wanna get started on why they can't stock a simple nut probably used 50 times on the car!
Anyway, crawl under the car to find the shifter control rod, the one that holds the bushings in a ring on one end, BROKEN!!! Weld separated! Call to same local dealer, "go ahead and tow it in, but don't know when we'll be able to get to it"! So, nice ride home in a flat-bed at $6/mile
You do the math!!! No, I didn't buy the "plus" towing coverage from AAA
Has anyone else ever had this part fail???? Not in stock at my local dealer either, of course! Car's probably down for most of the week. Now at home with NO CAR!!!
