it's not only that, but the air has to make another 90* turn into the TB while
going though the filer element. on top of that, the way the filter element pleats are sitting relative to airflow, turbulence is generated at teh tips of the pleats since the air is crossing them at a decently shallow angle. the 2.2L design is superior IMO becuase the air is traveling pretty much in a straight line through the filter element. all the turns are done through bare pipe. that's what prompted me to do all this. using that airbox combined with big bore pipes seems to work out real well.
