A lot of the problems with getting the shifter in the socket is people are reluctant (and I can see why) to give it a really good firm hit to pop it in. I use a plastic dead blow hammer and after much practice (I've done a few dozen) it can be done in one shot. The first few times I installed them I had a heck of a time thinking I would snap something. Having the shifter at the proper angle helps a lot too. I describe this in the install page I did.
I wasn't worried about the good whack, I just didn't have a big enuff FH
Maybe since I've only got 500 miles on the car it hasn't loosened up enough. I almost gave up since the stock shifter went back in so easily. Oh well, it's in now and my palm and other hand are nice an bruised. I missed with a couple whacks
