I have a 91 Legacy so things are slightly different for me, but I have my boost guage on the right top of my steering column, not because I couldn't find a better spot, but because this is where I wanted it. It is in the same general area as everything else, so a glance down to look at it is not a struggle, nor time consuming. To me it's purposeful.
I also sat in Adam Bloom's RS and he has a guage on each side of his steering column as well. Very easy to have a look at while driving. Again, pruposeful, but that's just my opinion. Ultimatly, you should put them wherever you feel most comfortable looking at them, not where they look good.
