Aesthetically, I would rather have the 98 or later coupe, but you're right - pre-96 means no OBD-II which means you can practically use anything you want. I would be torn between using the old closed block vs V7/V8 with AVCS though. I would still use the 5MT tranny so it's easier to have the clutch worked on.

I would have to say the JDM GC engines should be the easiest to swap onto a pre-96 chassis.
