Legacy 1990 legacy engine rebuild

Hi Everyone!

I was hoping to find some help and advice regarding my 235k mile old subaru legacy wagon.
about four months ago the engine overheated, and I thought the radiator or a hose was leaking because so little water was in it. then i noticed whitish exhaust fumes and a sweet smell, and a friend told me I needed to change the head gasket. now it's leaking oil big time, about 1 qt a day. I have done some minor repairs and replacements, this would be really the first big job. I thought I should maybe replace piston rings and bearings while the engine is out, but the list of things i'd like to replace keeps getting longer. what should i do? this is all to be done on a student budget. There is also the option of getting an engine from a junkyard. in that case which engines could be used to replace this one? It would be nice to get a 2.5L but will it fit? if anyone can help, I'd really appreciate if you shared your experience. thank you
