I'd say that the chipping on my 09' WRX with 46,000 miles on it is on par with my 1989 Mustang 5.0, except that the paint on the Mustang doesn't scratch when you touch it.

You're in MD - I'm not sure what part, but I travel Interstate 80 in Iowa/Illinois for around 50 miles/day and there's plenty of **** thrown all over the place. My wifes Hyundai Santa Fe is BLACK (my car is DGM), and gets washed at the ****ty tunnel-wash with rotating chamois like brushes and doesn't have a scratch on it (I hand wash mine with a nice, clean mit). Hell, she puts more miles on her car than I do and she only has four rock chips while my car has somewhere North of 20.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that Subaru paint is thinner than the rest, but it sure is chip-prone.
