This is consistent with my observations as well. I think this is one of the reasons a lot of stations have stopped advertising their mid and premium grade fuels on the street signs.

They advertise their competitive 87 octane price, and you pull in and fill up with 93 octane without looking at the price on the pump. Bang! You just got raped for an additional $2.50 on your fillup.

There's a couple of times I've stopped at one that was convenient on my way home, pulled up at the pump, cursed, and gone on to the next one. Last time I did this, there was a full $0.35 difference in price for 93 octane between the two stations.
