I have owned many high mileage trouble-free cars. I never filled the oil filter, because they were mounted horizontal.

The wrx is the first car I have owned where filling the oil filter with oil was possible. I do it now because I can while the old oil is draining. Plus the wrx is the first car I have owned where I don't have to raise the car to change the oil/filter.

Does pre-filling really help? Probably, if you drain the old oil overnight and there is no more oil film on the surfaces.

So, I do it because I don't like seeing a red oil light come on for a couple of seconds after I start the car with the fresh oil, and I change the oil frequently.

My other cars where this was not possible, ran well over 300,000 miles maintaining tight responsive I6 and V6 engines. Transmissions had to rebuilt, but never the engines, and they were driven hard through the gears.

This is my first performance car with Nikasil cylinder coatings on Aluminum. I have heard horror stories about gas/oil effects on these coatings. Mostly about BMW's in storage. So I do treat the H4 with a little more tenderness that the "bullet proof" I6 and V6. I don't think it can hurt since my H4 works hard putting out more hp than stock.
