I would say yes, they are correct. It's not a bad part, assembled incorrectly, manufacturing defect, etc. It's a hungry rodent.
Along the same lines as a tree fell on it, a train hit you, etc. Not covered, out of the hands of Subaru.

Possible your insurance (car or homeowners) may cover it. With deductible, likely cheaper to just fix it yourself/local shop.
