Most people here (any car enthusiast forum) are probably in the small majority, who will actually go by the book "break in procedure". Ask 20 people how to break in a car, and you will get 20 answers. It's a manufacturer recommended procedure. They don't recommend modifying cars, but people do it anyways.

It's not like the car will self destruct if he drives on the highway, just like any car - you may beat the hell out of it and have it last 200k miles or baby it like no other and have something blow up 40k miles later. Just the luck of the draw.
