The big switch from I6 to V6 was for packaging (both vertical and length, along with FWD transfer cases) and crash testing. With better safety structures these days, and higher hoodlines are a thing (no more sloping to bumper), and a move to more RWD cars again... you have a little more room to play with. This could be good news... sad thing is, not many new drivers even remember how stout and reliable I6s were compared to the V6s.

We had a Volare in the fam with the straight 6... 200+k miles "just add oil". I also had an '84 Maxima, brother had an '82. The 84 was the last year of the RWD I6 Maxima (the last real 4DSC). For '85 they went V6 FWD.

Inline 6 cylinder is also a balanced engine from a vibration perspective. Engine mounts can be simple and cheap.
