Default Buick Lucerne May Get the Axe

A shift in priorities could see Buick focusing on the midsize sedan segment, leaving a hole in the brand's lineup the size of the Buick Lucerne. According to Automotive News, weak sales of the current Lucerne which is based on a front-drive architecture that can trace its roots to the Citation have Buick weighing the model's options. "[The full-sized car segment] has declined 35 percent this calendar year," says Buick-Pontiac-GMC vice president Susan Docherty. "Bringing more entries into a declining segment wouldn't necessarily be smart."

There aren't any plans on the books to drop the current Lucerne, evidently, but there also aren't plans to redesign or replace it. In other words, the Lucerne will trudge along until the sun sets on the W-body platform. Which, given its longevity thus far, should be sometime around when plutonium begins to decay
