I use the nickel-plated casings I got from a couple boxes of Federal Premium (I think you shot some of them) for hunting loads because the nickel is less likely to tarnish in those conditions. I've heard from some people not to bother with them at all, or if you do to limit the number of times you reload them. I'd worry the nickel plating covers up weak spots in the brass so that you don't notice them.
I don't see why you couldn't continue to use good brass for +P. You may not get the same number of reloads from them (not sure how pistol brass flows/trims) but seems like you won't from the nickel-plated either. If you're going to keep them in a leather bandolier then yeah, go nickel
