The iphone, much like the original ipod, has experienced a revisionists version of history due to the growing success it has seen. Yes the iphone was much more successful that the original ipod, but there were other phones that were equals on many fronts. The iphone brought a unique experience, but one with many many faults.
At least, that's my opinion.

The original iPhone was indeed the best phone on the market at the time. Lack of GPS/MMS/3G included. I'd say up to the 3GS Apple made the best smartphone.
It wasn't (for me) until the Nexus One launched that Android overtook the iPhone. Since then Android has had a ton of work put into it, and is a vastly improved operating system. Apple...um, copied Android's notification shade and allowed you to change the wallpaper. That's about it.
