My friend's 2002 WRX purchased @ 105k miles, then driven for another 35k [hard] miles and then we changed the belt (belt, pulleys, waterpump, valve cover gaskets) @ 140k miles.

How mechanically inclined are you and do you have the proper tools to do not only the job, but remove any other items such as the cam pulleys if need-be?

Respectfully, do you go out on the weekends? Don't do this for a few weekends and you'll have the funds to do this work.

Economics and opportunity cost: timing belt goes and what is the cost of repairing the engine? What can you forgo for now to get this done? Start penny-pinching and get this done as soon as you can.
