Default help diagnose car prob? (not mine)

Hey guys.

A friend (well, okay, her husband) is having car trouble and I was wondering if you could help diagnose the problem so maybe they could avoid dumping their tax returns into the car (if not necessary).

The car is currently dead, awaiting a tow. All I have so far is "He said it made clunks and jerks forward even when he has the brake down all the way and the "power loss take to dealer immediately" light came on".
(caveat - friend relaying this info is _useless_ with cars, so I suppose something could be lost in translation. She's cute, but automotively disinclined.)

It's a 2008 GMC Colorado, I believe (will get confirmation).

Any ideas? I have no clue, as I'm a noob at internal car bits (seriously, I need to find like an engines for dummies book). Any useful questions I can ask so y'all might have better information for diagnosis?
