You don't need to pull the transmission, but the upper bolts on the rear extension case are not at all easy to remove/install due to the proximity of the transmission to the transmission tunnel. You also need to clean and re-apply gasket former to the extension case during reassembly... and this is challenging with the transmission in, to say the least. Lastly, the 4 split bearings have to stay on the shaft when you install the c.diff itself... this can be challenging as well.
