A lot of your drivetrain slack could be attributed to suspension settings as well. You could be under or over dampened on the shocks.

There there is always going to be driveline slack in a manual car, especially one with a fairly involved AWD system like the WRX. Automatics don't have as much slack because the torque converter softens and reduces the slack.

Getting on and off the throttle hard in a deeper gear, especially 1st and 2nd will certainly result in some fairly aggressive chassis movement. Compound that with the fact that the reciprocating assembly and flywheel are relatively light so the chassis is more free to overwhelm the motor on off throttle, in gear events.

In a true race situation, for which of these aftermarket are designed, you're either hard on the brakes or are on the gas. There's no letting off and coasting.
