I ended up spending my lunch break reading about the auto focus system.
Looks like I may not want to use all 51 points, but perhaps the 21 or even 9 point depending on the situation. This blog item was very helpful:

This is definitely a camera body that I can grow into. Now I just need to start buying better glass.
