I'd second trying a Vermont Hillclimb(Neha-www.hillclimb.org). They are a good bunch of folks that will help you out if you need it. They are as safe as you want to make it. If you are the type of driver that can't help but hang on the edge of control, then they aren't a great fit unless you like fixing your car. If you can be content with running up the hill at 80% until you get to know the hill, you'll be safe and go home in one piece.
It is great fun, you just have to use your head. Make sure you look at the rules to make sure your vehicle and safety equipment are up to the task.
