They're not going to introduce a hybrid powertrain with CVT when BRZs with the automatic and WRXs with CVT constitute a very small percentage of current sales of those cars. The people who buy them overwhelmingly want the manual, not a CVT automatic (or regular 6 spd automatic).

If you can't sell cars, that's worse than not being able to meet onerous regulations. People aren't going to be interested in the WRX if there's not a stick shift in it, and doubly so for the STI. There's lots of other options for automatic $30k-$40k sports cars out there that are mostly automatic already. There's very few good powerful sports cars that are affordable and still have a manual transmission.
