What Retrac and Dubya said. The aluminum bell housing sticks to the aluminum block pretty tight after a few years. There are alignment pins that tend to really want to stay engaged. I had to *gently* use a sharp chisel to initially start the two sides apart (02 WRX). Once I saw a small separation, I used PB Blaster at the alignment pins to help free it up. Use a little anti-seize on the pins when you reassemble. Good luck.
