Once I was bleeding a clutch on my last car and if I tried the traditional method of just opening and closing it while pumping the pedal went totally limp right to the floor, I would have to pull it back up by hand and it never worked.

Finally I found something in a maintenance manual that said to put the hose coming off the bleeder valve into a cup half full of brake fluid (so the hose is completely submerged) and then just bleed like normal.

No clue why that makes any difference at all but it worked. I just had to pull the clutch back up by hand once, and then pumping it started to pump fluid properly.
