I know a majority of you all have probably heard about the Loveland Pass avalanche this past weekend by now. From everything that I gathered, it feels a lot like Tunnel Creek 2.0....a group of highly experienced backcountry riders caught in a bad spot. There were a couple serious heavy hitters in the splitboard community caught in this one. Through my Colorado trip this past winter, I was fortunate enough to meet a few of the "who's who" in splitboarding and when I heard about this incident I feared the worst and braced myself for the terrible news. Mike Bennett, a rep for Jones Snowboards, was one my acquaintances on my trip. My heart sank hearing that one that perished was "a local Jones rep." Thankfully Mike wasn't one caught, but he was one of the first responders on site. He wrote up a quick narrative of the account here:

Joe Timlin was the Jones rep killed and the organizer for the Rocky Mountain High backcountry gathering that was going on that day. Also among the five was Rick Gaukel, a local well known guide.

RIP to the five. The splitboard community will be reeling from this one for awhile.
