i once bought a used td04 turbo that was supposedly in great condition and low miles, and it turned out to be blown and leaking coolent etc. its hard to tell, it had no shaft play either so if a seal is blown how to check i dunno.
yea it has some shaft play but after doing research in this forum for the 2.0 motors, most said some is normal and there does appear to be some but not alot. the turbo was kind of oily when i got it so that kind of concerned me but the dude seems like a nice guy so im hoping he wouldnt shaft me!

other then rust on the exhaust housing the turbo is in great condition with no damage..hmmm
