I don't want to own a vehicle where there's a general lack of a sense of "signature style" to it. (For reference, I used to own an Integra, and I actually went into a Subaru dealership looking for the BRZ.)

The Impreza sedan was marginally different enough in styling that sets it aside from other vehicles in its class that I grudgingly accepted it (still not entirely sold on the front syling elements, actually). At times / from certain angles though, it has the appearance of a Toyota Matrix.

Truth be told, I almost bought a Lancer. The guy who lost my sale (and his manager) can thank their hardline sales pressure and playing meaningless games with me. At least that vehicle had stylistic elements that said, "I'm a Mitsubishi".

Anyways, that's just my 2 cents (soon to be outlawed in Canada ) on the matter of vehicular styling.
To me, what makes Subaru truly unique is the boxer engine and the symmetrical AWD. So even if the car's appearance becomes more mainstream, you still have a unique drivetrain working for you.

Be glad you didn't buy the Lancer. Mitsubishi is pulling out of North America, right? I wouldn't want to own a Mitsubishi now anymore than I'd want to own a Saturn now.
