I've rarely go through a battery in full day with a nikon. But Canon does make some good lenses and a ton of them. But any camera now days is 10x better than most people need so it really doesn't matter as long as you keep it in auto.
I do photography professionally now and would never shoot in just "auto" mode I am much more creative than my camera. ( IMO anyway ) My 7D lets me customize all the buttons and menus to everything I want and I have no problems finding what I need. And as far as the battery problem goes, I average about 2000 pictures on each battery. I have a battery grip that holds 2 batteries, so I go for about 4k pictures or 3 hours of HD video before I need to recharge. And my camera shows my battery level in % and how many pictures each battery has taken and how many it should be able to take. So power is no problem at all with my 7D. But even my old Rebel XTI would last for 700 pictures or so on each battery, which is more than enough for me. I havent spent much time with the 1d series, but my 7D is solid and I have absolutely no complaints.

OP - you will love the camera, but as soon as you get used to it you will be wanting something more . Thats the nature of things though and no matter what camera you get, you will always want one better once you get to know the camera you have . Good luck!
