Isn't that how most companies do it? The GT-R SpecV charged something like double the normal price for less luxury and more focused performance. From the Integra to the NSX, Acura/Honda charged more for the Type-R variants, even if they lost some interior pieces. Same thing with Ferrari's 360 Challenge Stradale and F430 Scuderia, charging a lot more for basically no interior amenities. The first Ferrari I had ever ridden in was a F430 16M Scuderia, but when I finally got into a "regular" Ferrari, it was so much more plush. So it's not just the Germans.

Personally I'd have preferred for them to keep the 3-Series moniker, but I understand their strategy, even if it is leaving behind 30+ years of history. They want to move the coupe more upscale, likely help it compete better with the Audi A5. Plus it will help their intended resulting price hike be justified in the eyes of the typical consumer. But the name change was something that was rumored to be happening for the current generation, but obviously they delayed it.
