Two scenarios:
1) You got ripped off, and was sold the OEM as the SPT
2) You didn't look carefully enough. The section below the shifter rod pivot bushing is longer.

Since you had someone else with you to verify that your SPT shift lever looked the same as your OEM one, it sounds like you got ripped off pretty good. Hope you didn't lose too much money on that purchase.

the linkage is all the same. will not make any difference in the overall shortness or feel. Changing the shifter lever AND the bushings (front and rear) will make the short crisp feeling you are looking for.
SOA/FHI/STi/SPT sell the shifter linkage complete since thats how they get it from their manufacturers.
