Default Donor for EA swap

My 85 GL-10 (EA82) is toast, cracked head, #3 plug is green from all of the antifreeze I've been burning. I want to swap in a 2.2L non-turbo (seems like it has plenty of power). From what people have said, I should go with a 92-96 legacy (OBD1), but is the late-model OBD2 that much more complex? I'm making a wiring harness anyway, ya know. I've come across two complete, totalled cars: a '97 impreza outback and a '99 legacy 2.2L, would either of these make good candidates for the swap? Should I just hold out for the OBD1? I kinda don't want the 2.5L because its a non-clearance motor. Anyway, since I have NO parts yet, what direction should I try and go. This will be a road-trip/ commuter/ camping car, basically very limited off-roading, just gravel roads. Reliability is what I really want.
