Isn't the point of f1 to develop and showcase the most advanced pieces of machinery ever made? why must we limit it then. Let Ferrari dump 1 trillion dollars into their car with no limitations and see what comes up (domination obviously like in the past except 10x worse, or better depending on your view). I've always felt the sport was more about the car than the driver (although Michael Schumacker helped ).

Because if that happened we'd have two Ferrari's racing each other and no one else to compete with.
Look at unrestricted race series of the past:
Group B Rally: Suicide. Stupidly powerful cars with severely limited traction. Drivers and spectators died. Costs got out of control and the plug was pulled before manufacturers all pulled out.
Can Am: Every more powerful cars and more radical designs. Costs again got to high and it was done for.
F1 won't be very exciting to watch if Ferrari's dont at least have someone else on the track to beat.
