Are you shooting b/w or color? b/w is easy to develop yourself, but color is more troublesome on top of the chemicals and equipment needed.

If you want the highest quality:
- take photos
- develop the film (some labs will develop film without making prints for $2-3)
- scan the film (not the printed photos) with a dedicated film scanner (not a flatbed scanner)

If you just want web quality:
- scan the printed photos

Or go digital. If you can't stand shutter-lag from a point-and-shoot you're going to have to opt for a digital SLR. Entry level digital SLR would be the Nikon D70 and Canon 300D (Digital Rebel). NOTE: You will not be able to use the old Canon less on the 300D because the lens mount is not compatible.
