50mm is slightly maganified over a straight 35mm. Its a prime lens,meaning it has no telephoto range such as a 70-300mm 4.0-5.6

1:1.8 is the speed of the len also known as the maximum aperature (how wide the shutter will open)
With a greater aperature...lower #, ie 1.8 vs 5.6 you get more light in so you can use a faster shutter speed. less blurring on the subject.
it also affect depth of field. the lower the # the smaller the dept of field, meaning the background will be blurry. If you go up in aperature # ( actually smaller opening) then the background will be in focus
