What exactly do you consider to be useful for off-road performance? The 4-cylinder FWD-based Jeep Renegade and Compass Trailhawk seem to hold their own in sand, gravel, grades, and rocks. The same can be said of the Range Rover Evoque. Once you get it off the OE summer rubber and give it some all terrain tires it will do more any nearly any of the owners will try. GM gave the GMC Acadia AllTerrain a dedicated off-road performance mode and all terrain tires. It'll do more than you think it will. None of them are going to beat a Wrangler Rubicon at any of these tasks, but all of them are going to offer more ride comfort, less road noise, and better fuel economy than the Wrangler...which is exactly the point of a crossover.
