I guess Consumer Reports has the same questions regarding the XV as I do:

The Crosstrek small quasi-SUV is mechanically the same as the Impreza hatchback, but with a raised ride height, which gives it enough altitude to slosh through most deeply rutted roads. It may appeal to those living at the end of a dirt road that don't want anything big and bulky. The cabin is rather noisy, the ride is stiff, and the little 148-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has to work hard to maintain highway speed, but fuel economy is a gratifying 26 mpg. In the end the regular Impreza hatch, which is quieter, quicker, cheaper, and rides better, makes more sense. Based on the Impreza, reliability is likely to be above average. A hybrid version will go on sale this Fall.

Why buy one:
  • It's roomier than alternatives like the Nissan Juke or Mini Countryman
  • Even well equipped, it costs less than most small SUVs
  • It easily copes with moonscape country lanes and light off-roading
  • It gets better fuel economy than most alternatives
  • User-friendly cabin with simple controls and generous visibility
  • Some buyers will be drawn by the out-there styling and neat colors
Why not buy one:
  • The cabin is very noisy
  • Ride and steering aren't as good as its Impreza donor
  • Most small SUVs have lots more cargo space
  • It lacks the low-range gearing and underbody ruggedness of a true off-roader
  • Funky looks have a way of getting old fast
  • Most buyers will do better with an Impreza Sport for $2000 less

Cosmetically, I like the XV just fine. But functionally, if I was in the market for a small SUV (which I'm not), I'd gravitate toward the Forester, or the Mazda CX-5. Personally, I prefer a lower car, for cosmetic and performance reasons.
