If you have an auto, it puts it in FWD-only mode. You use it only when you have a spare on to prevent damage to AWD due to the differing tire diameter, and it's not good to do it for a long time.

It also disables VDC; the manual doesn't tell you this, and there is no indicator light on the dash. If your AWD light is on, assume that VDC will not work.
