- Based on the steering wheel position, I decided I was off 2 splines, and I figured that was 1 at the rack input and 1 at the steering shaft. Took the car to the Fort Myer auto hobby shop after work, unbolted the U-joint at each end, and successfully shifted it to the correct position. (I probably could've done it at home, but I went to the hobby shop so I could have someone else hold the steering wheel while I moved the U-joint, just to be sure I got it right.)

It's a heckuva lot easier to remove/reinstall that U-joint when (1) it's not semi-rusted in place, and (2) doesn't have one pivot almost frozen solid!
