Question snow tire help

Hey folks, I'm going to be bringing my RS to New Mexico to go skiing this spring break and I'm wondering what is a viable option for tires.
Right now I drive on a set of 215/50-16 BFG KDW's. They are great for central Texas where the we never see a freeze for any length of time, but I think they would be death in snow and ice. The cheapest option I think would be to keep a set of snow chains in the trunk in case the roads got bad. But will they fit? Are chains a bad idea in the first place? I've never used them before.
The other option is to buy a set of real snow tires, mount them to my autocross wheels (Forester 15") and then try to sell them after I'm done with them. I know this isn' a ceap option, but I guess it's better than putting the car in a ditch.
How bad will the roads be? I have experience driving in snow, but in a front wheel drive car with appropriate tires. Will the combination of summer tires and AWD sort of balance each other out? Any ideas, or suggestions?
TIA
